Rematch successfully captures the chaotic fun of street soccer with a high skill ceiling, but its brilliant foundation is hampered by technical issues, frustrating teammates, and a barebones progression system. A promising but rough start.


Rematch offers a fresh take on the football genre, moving away from simulation to embrace the chaotic energy of street soccer. Developed by Sloclap, it diverges from the studio's previous martial arts titles like Absolver and Sifu. The game focuses on small-sided matches where players control a single athlete. Gameplay is fast-paced and rule-free, with enclosed pitches featuring transparent walls that keep the ball constantly in play, reminiscent of Rocket League. This design choice encourages a relentless, sometimes messy, flow of action.

A significant element is the steep learning curve. The game employs a unique third-person perspective locked behind the player and features a physics-based ball system that prevents the ball from sticking to a player's feet. The controls are unconventional, particularly the shooting mechanic, which requires aiming with a reticle rather than using a traditional button press. This focus on manual skill ensures a level playing field where player ability is paramount, as there are no character stats or progression systems to upgrade.

Despite its strong foundational concept, the experience has rough edges. Technical issues such as netcode problems and lag can lead to inconsistent tackling and goalkeeping. The quality of play is also heavily dependent on teammates, as selfish play can disrupt team dynamics. The long-term appeal hinges on a battle pass and cosmetic microtransactions. Its core, however, is captivating, successfully translating the pure, unadulterated fun of a casual kickabout into a compelling video game.
